Las Colinas is an internationally-recognized, master-planned community located within the City of Irving.
Created as a Texas nonprofit corporation in 1973, the 12,000-acre development is a unique combination of commercial, residential, educational, recreational, and retail land use that is home to approximately 31,000 people. The community has a wide range of housing stock that range from urban lofts to stately homes.
Las Colinas also features well-manicured canals and walk paths meandering through business and residential sections, inviting passersby to stop and smell the flowers (but don’t pick them—leave them for others to enjoy!).
The Urban Center is the center of business in Las Colinas. It has the largest concentration of office space in North Texas and is anchored by the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas and encompasses Lake Carolyn and its old-world style canals and walking paths.
At the heart of the area is the largest equestrian sculpture in the world, The Mustangs of Las Colinas. This amazing work of art depicts nine bronze horses galloping across a moving stream. The horses were cast at a scale of one and one-half times the normal size of mustangs, making the sculpture even more impressive.
Over the past decade, the Urban Center has grown exponentially as thousands of high-end apartments and townhomes have been constructed around the area’s centerpiece, Lake Carolyn, and the DART Light Rail stations.
The Urban Center is fast becoming known as a restaurant and entertainment center. Two recent projects are bringing retail, restaurants, entertainment and office space to the area. The Irving Music Factory features live music, a movie theatre, restaurants and retail. Water Street on the shore of Lake Carolyn, will add another 60,000 square feet of retail and restaurants in addition to apartments.
Sasaki Las Colinas Urban Center Master Plan
In 2010, the City of Irving and the Las Colinas Association created a task force to study and plan the future of the Las Colinas Urban Center. Sasaki Associates, Inc., was retained as the consultant to assist with development of a master plan.
The two major goals for the plan were 1) to create a pedestrian-friendly, vibrant, mixed-use residential district that is a desirable place to live for young workers, families, and seniors, and 2) restore the Urban Center’s position as one of the premier corporate office locations in North Texas.
